The ideal trip for those with a sense of adventure and enthusiasm for the ancient cultures of the Andes.

Staying at small hotels/guesthouses and using a variety of local transport, from coaches, trains, planes, hiking and even reed canoes, this trip will give you a unique opportunity to experience the authentic Latin American lifestyle.

Additional to the 15 and 21 day Peru Encompassed, it is also possible to start your trip in Lima and fly back from Juliaca (near Lake Titicaca) on the 19th day of the Tour. This is a popular option for people who want to see Lake Titicaca but prefer to get international flights in and out of Lima.

All trips starting from March 05 will now include the Sacred Valley tour, a day trip from Cuzco.  The tour takes you to picturesque towns and Inca sites in the beautiful Urubamba or ‘Sacred’ Valley of the Incas where you’ll find temples, terraces, local communities and markets.  The tour will finish at a comfortable camp site at km82, the start of the Inca Trail!  We will spend the night here so you can get up a little later, have breakfast and start your trek right away.  Previously the first day of the trail was a 4am start in Cuzco with a 2 ½ hour bus journey to the beginning of the trail, so we hope you’ll enjoy a more leisurely first morning!

The tourist ticket which gives entry to all the sites on the Sacred Valley tour is extra and currently costs US$20.  In addition to all these sites it also allows entry to many museums, churches and archaeological sites in Cuzco.  It’s valid for 7 days which will cover your entire stay there.  If you have an ISIC (International Student Identity Card), bring this with you as you’ll get a discount on your ticket.

If you do not want to do the Sacred Valley tour, please let us or your tour leader know and we’ll arrange transport for you from Cuzco to km82 where you’ll re-join the group the night before the Inca Trail.

Day 1 The capital of Peru, Lima is a city of contrasts. Here you’ll encounter both abundant wealth and grinding poverty, modern skyscrapers next to some of the finest museums and historical monuments in Latin America. You will have a free day to explore its many museums, markets and colonial plazas.

Day 2 Our first stop south of Lima is at the Ballestas Islands in the Paracas National Reserve. Here we take a boat trip to view one of the most important marine reserves in the world with the highest concentration of rare and exotic sea birds and sea mammals.

Day 3 An hours drive inland in the heart of the Ica Desert is Peru's main wine centre. Here we visit the Tacama winery, originally a Jesuit run Bodega it now produces export quality wines as well as Peru's national drink, Pisco. After our own tasting session we continue a few kilometres to the nearby Oasis of Huacachina. A palm fringed lake surrounded by impressive sand dunes, you can relax on the beach, go for a swim and then if its an adrenaline rush you're after head out with your Tour Leader on a custom made dune buggy and roar across the desert sands to the top of enormous dunes and then sand board down them - imagine snowboarding but on sand instead! After an unforgettable desert sunset we head back to the oasis.

Day 4 Now we journey to one of the worlds greatest archaeological mysteries - the Nazca Lines. Only discovered 70 years ago from the air, these huge figures carved into the desert floor are best viewed by light aircraft. Thought to have been made by three different civilisations going back more than 2000 years, there are many contrasting theories about what they signify and why they are there, it is worthwhile asking local opinion - you may well be surprised with the replies! Also memorable is a visit to Chauchilla Cemetery with its well-preserved mummies. Leaving the Atacama Desert we begin to climb into the Andes mountain range towards Arequipa.

Days 5 to 7 You will have three days to explore this beautiful colonial city and the spectacular surrounding area. There are options to go cycling, trekking, horse riding and visit Colca Canyon, which at 900m is not only one of the deepest in the world but also the home of the majestic Condors. Here you can view the condors circling lazily in the thermals rising from the canyon floor.

Days 8 & 9 A short flight over the Andes Mountains takes us to Cuzco, the outdoors capital of Peru and our base for the next 7 days. Although Cuzco is today a colonial city most of its churches and museums are built on top of original Inca stonewalls which are clearly visible.

Days 10 to 13 In the Urubamba Valley we begin our 4 day hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This moderate to strenuous hike is a once in a lifetime experience and anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can master it. Many believe that Machu Picchu itself cannot be understood without following the steps of the Incas on the Inca Trail. A stunning combination of awesome views, Inca ruins, magnificent mountains and exotic adventure. There is also the option to undertake a shorter hike travelling by train part of the way to the ruins. Our route back to Cuzco for both options is by train.

Due to environmental concerns, current regulations in Peru limit the amount of people on the Classic Inca Trail to 500 per day. This means that there are only about 160 places for trekkers as the rest are taken up by the porters and guides. All trekkers need to have a permit and these must be booked at least 30 days in advance. As you can imagine, places get booked up quickly, well in advance! To obtain a permit for the Inca Trail, name (as shown in your passport), date of birth, passport details and a deposit are required which means we can only apply for them once we receive your booking - there is no way to reserve places in advance without these details. So the earlier you book, the better chance you have of getting a permit!

If there are no places on the Classic Inca Trail or if you would like to do something different, there are alternative Inca trail treks that see less tourists and have outstanding scenery equal to, if not exceeding that of the classic Inca Trail! The Incas made many paths through the mountains and left evidence of their existence in the form of stonework and terraces. We can organise alternative trails for you which all include visiting the ruins of Machu Picchu.

ONLY THE INCA TRAIL TREK HAS LIMITED PLACES. THE RUINS OF MACHUPICCHU CAN ALWAYS BE VISITED, REACHED EITHER BY AN ALTERNATIVE TREK OR BY TRAIN.

Days 10 to 13 Alternative Trek to the Inca Trail - LARES VALLEY to MACHU PICCHU

This trek is ideal for travellers wishing to get off the beaten track but still take in the breathtaking ruins of Machu Picchu.

It is a wonderful trek taking you right from the watershed of the Apurimac to the Urubamba. We traverse through beautiful green valleys and camp next to turquoise glacial lakes. We also come across many Inca archaeological sites and enjoy a wide variety of flora, fauna and wildlife.

On our last day we are rewarded with the magnificent view of Machu Picchu. This is a true Andean odyssey!

Day 10: Cusco - Calca - Lares Hot Springs – Wacawasi (3,800m)

An early departure from Cusco by bus as we travel through the Sacred Valley and onto Lares Hot Springs. We spend the morning enjoying the medicinal hot springs. We take lunch and commence walking for around two hours to reach our campsite.

Day 11: Wacawasi - Epsaycocha (3,700m)

After breakfast we start walking up through the valley until we arrive at the village of Huacawasi. People here produce some of the finest weavings in Peru. Here, we can observe their great skills and brilliant techniques in the fabrication of ponchos and other garments. We have lunch here before continuing to the Condor Pass (4,100m) where we admire beautiful vistas of Mount Veronica and as we begin to descend we come across the beautiful turquoise Epsaycocha Lake. We camp closeby.

Day 12: Epsaycocha - Patacancha - Huylloc - Pumamarka - Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

Today our trail descends into a wide valley. We arrive at the community of Huylloc where we have lunch. We continue on our way for approximately two hours before we arrive at Pumamarka and admire the Inca terraces. We finally arrive at the well preserved Inca village of Ollaytaytambo with its impressive Inca ruins and fascinating history. We take the evening train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. We overnight in a comfortable hostal.

Day 13: Machu Picchu

Full day at Machu Picchu, by evening train return to Cusco.

Days 14 & 15 Are free days in Cuzco to relax and recover as well as explore some of the colourful markets in the surrounding Sacred Valley, a great place to buy local crafts from Alpaca woollen jumpers to musical instruments. The more adventurous in the group can undertake white-water rafting.

Day 15 Today, those on the 15 days trip will board the plane to Lima where the trip ends on arrival. Should you like to stay in Lima an extra night please let us know and we can arrange accommodation for you.

Days 16 to 18 Bordering Peru and Bolivia at 3800m lies Lake Titicaca, the original place of the Uros Indians who have made their homes on floating reed islands. By boat we visit the floating islands during the day and then we go that one step beyond the average and spend the night with one of the Indian families on the lesser known islands Isla Amantani or Taquile. Spending some time in these local communities is like stepping back in time and will provide a unique opportunity to learn more about the traditional lifestyle of the Andean people and their customs as well as supporting these families with some extra income.

Day 19 You will have a free day in Puno to relax on the shores of Lake Titicaca and do some last minute shopping in Peru.

For those who would like to return to Lima we can help you arrange a flight on this day from Juliaca to Lima.

If you take this option the Local Payment is only US$320 and the average flight cost is US$80.

Day 20 In the morning we leave for Bolivia. Just after crossing the border is the picturesque lakeside village of Copacabana where we stop for lunch. From here we continue onto the impressive city of La Paz.

Bolivia is considered the most indigenous of all South American countries and this is clearly visible in La Paz. The capital is a hilly city full of markets and traditionally dressed people. There is also the opportunity for a one day ‘gravity assisted’ mountain bike adventure. A great place to spend a few extra days at the end of your trip, sightseeing, shopping, visiting museums, or several excursions.

Day 21 La Paz The tour finishes in the morning. However if you wish to spend some extra time in La Paz we can help arrange post tour accommodation for you.

Festival of Inti Raymi This is Cuzco’s prime annual event and a public holiday. The sun was the principle object of Inca worship and at their winter solstice, in June, the Incas honoured the solar deity with a great celebration known as Inti Raymi, the sun festival.
Hundreds of local men and women play the parts of Inca priests, nobles, soldiers and the Inca Emperor. The procession winds its way from Qoricancha – Sun Temple – through Cuzco accompanied by singing and drinking, to Sacsayhuaman, where thousands of people gather on the ancient stones to watch the ceremony begin. The music and dancing continues to nightfall. Our trips in June each year visit this Fiesta.
