Maliau Basin Trek (6 days)

Departure: 0600 hours

 

Day 1 

Depart for 5-6 hours overland offroad journey to Sook, Nabawan, Sapulut to reach the Security Gate of Maliau Basin Conservation Area (MBCA). Proceed to the Agathis Camp where we will stay overnight. After dinner, enjoy a night drive in search of nocturnal animals through the 26km access road along the Agathis Camp & Belian camp (subject to weather condition). Possible encounter of sambar deer, bearded pigs, Malay civet and flying squirrel. (LD)

 

Day 2                     

After breakfast, begin trekking through the rainforest. Hike through steep hills, as you will be ascending to the highest level of the Basin. Break for a prepared packed lunch. Continue trekking until we reach Camel Trophy Camp, our stop for the night. In the afternoon, proceed to the nearby waterfalls of Giluk. Spend your day swimming and relaxing at the waterfall. The entire trek will be 7 km. (BLD)

 

Day 3                     

Today, we trek for approximately 13 km through the dense forest of Maliau Basin. Discover the abundance of nepenthes plants along "Jalan Babi". Arrive at Ginseng Campsite, relax and swim in the nearby cool forest waterfall and immerse yourself to the sound of the wild forest. Overnight at Ginseng Campsite. (BLD)

 

Day 4                     

Wake up to the calls of Gibbons and the enchanting sounds of the forest in the morning before continuing your trekking to the spectacular seven tier Maliau Falls and enjoy a refreshing swim at one of the most remote places on earth. Soak in the atmosphere and spend the whole day unwinding your mind to mother nature before trekking back to Ginseng Campsite for overnight. The trek will be 5 km each way. (BLD)

 

Day 5                     

After breakfast, leave Ginseng Campsite for the 9 km trek to Agathis Camp to arrive in late afternoon. Overnight at Agathis Camp. (BLD)

 

Day 6                     

After breakfast, depart Agathis Camp for Keningau en route to Kota Kinabalu. (BL)

 

 

Maliau Basin in Brief

 

Located at the south-central of Sabah, approximately 40km of the Kalimantan border is The Lost World, Maliau Basin. With 590 sq km in size, Maliau Basin originally was part of Yayasan Sabah Concession Area and voluntarily designated as a Conservation Area in 1981 for research, education, and training purposes. Upgraded in 1997 to a Class I Protection Forest Reserve and extended to present size. Gazetted as a Cultural Heritage Site under the state Cultural Heritage (Conservation) Enactment in 1999. Day to day management by Yayasan Sabah on behalf of Maliau Basin Management Committee. The Rivers of Maliau Basin flows out into the Kuamut River, a major tributary of the Kinabatangan.

 

The main forests are Lower montane, Heath, Lowland and hill dipterocarp forest. Over 460 species types of flora have been identified, including 6 species of pitcher plants and 80 species of orchid. For fauna, over 69 mammal species, 261 bird species and over 30 species of amphibians so far recorded.

 

Items to bring: Leech socks, Long Pants for during trekking, Sleeping bag at comfort zone 15°C or 23°C, Rain cover or water tight proof bags, Water tight proof bags, Have at least 2 -2.5 L/ day of drinking water bottle, Swim wear, Insect repellent, Walking stick, Head lamps (including extra bulb and batteries), Personal Toiletries, Slipper or sandals, Energy food (chocolate, raisins, nuts, rehydration salt, glucose, etc)

 

Note: Temperature at night can go between 13 – 15°C

Company will provide Mosi-net for guest.                                                                                                                     

Bags for the porters to bring if possible have a 2 strap sling and not one to be carried on the shoulder.

This is off the beaten trek and ideal for small group only. Physical fitness is essential.
