India Trekking

THE HIDDEN HIMALAYA

An unusual and ambitious trek though the remote Bara Bhangal region of the Indian Himalaya.

As you head north from Delhi, the level plains of the sub-continent give way to the Shivalik foothills and then, suddenly, the land is crumpled upwards into the Himalaya. This first chain of peaks is known as the Pir Pinjal range and it here amongst this vast but often forgotten stretch of mountains that our challenging trek takes place.

Heading out from the Kullu Valley, our route takes us through the Bara Bhangal region and across two significant passes, the Kaliheni (4797m) and the Thamser (4624m), to reach the Kangra Valley foothills to the south. The mountains are vast, wild and empty, the terrain tough and often unforgiving, but the beauty and timelessness of the landscape carry a spirit of adventure rarely found today. Bear, leopard, monal and eagle still find space here and even, allegedly, an elusive creature resembling the yeti has been seen. Home only to the nomadic Gaddi shepherd and one isolated village, these trails are rarely trekked and the area retains a quality of untouched tranquillity.

If you are looking for a more fulfilling and memorable experience in the mountains, then this could be the trek for you.
